I love a road trip. I would much rather travel by car than by plane because that way you can see all the great, unexpected countryside and stops. There is so many interesting, weird and fascinating things for travelers to see that make for the coolest, cheap vacations out there when you are driving.
Taking a road trip just about anywhere in the United States to me, is a great idea. There are plenty of very cool stops off the beaten path that those who fly just won't be able to ever see and experience.
For instance, last week I took a trip up to Portland, Oregon with the family and besides seeing the very beautiful (and wet) forests of Oregon and eating at some very good (and cheap) restaurants, we stopped by a little place off the Interstate called the Mystery House or the Oregon Vortex.
This is a place that has been featured on television on such shows as the Discovery Channel and the Travel Channel to name just a few. Built in the 1890's as an assay office for a mining company and in 1910 the building slid down the hill in a storm. The house is not plumb or level and awkwardly skewd. Visitors get a feeling of uneasiness and disorientation inside and outside of the house.
But it is not really the house that makes you feel this way but the area of land it sits on and around it. The Oregon Vortex is a spherical field of whirling force, they say, with 1/2 above ground and 1/2 below the ground. This force makes a dome like field which bends and refracts light to make things appear to have different physical properties. It all sounds too amazing but I can say it is true since I have experienced it for myself. Next time you are in Oregon do not miss the Mystery House!
